Kenya delays reopening of schools

However, preliminary results indicate a close contest between Deputy President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for the presidency.

Kenya delays reopening of schools

As vote counting continues nationwide following Tuesday's elections, Kenya's education minister has delayed the start of classes until next Monday.

On Thursday, the schools were supposed to reopen.

In Kenya, there are hundreds of primary and secondary schools that serve as voting locations.

Prof. George Magoha issued an apology for the hardships caused by the delay, but added that the government was focused on "ensuring the safety and comfort of students during this period."

As parents rushed to pick up their children from schools on short notice, chaotic scenes resulted from last week's decision to close schools unexpectedly, which caught many schools and parents off guard.

It can take a few days before the official election results are made public.

However, preliminary results indicate a close contest between Deputy President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for the presidency.
