Kenya accused of 'misleading' people over Eid statement

After announcing a holiday on Friday to commemorate Eid ul-Fitr, some Muslims have accused the Kenyan government of deceiving the populace.

The vacation was declared on Wednesday by Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki in a gazette notification.

Hassan Ole Naado, chairman of the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (Supkem), claimed on the website of The Nation that the government's proclamation was confusing Muslims because the choice should only be made based on the moon's sighting.

According to Mr. Naado, the chief kadhi alone should declare the end of Ramadan, not the executive branch.

"Muslims ought to have been consulted before the government made its choice. This is a serious error and misrepresentation, he said.

Many Muslims in the nation used social media to criticize the government's action.
