John Mahama officially files petition to Supreme Court
John Dramani Mahama

The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has officially filed a petition in Ghana’s Supreme Court to oppose the 2020 election results declared by the Electoral Commission of Ghana.

The chair of the EC, Madam Jean Mensa on December 9, 2020, declared Nana Akufo Addo of the New Patriotic Party as the winner of the 2020 elections held on December 7 and various protests have been held by the biggest opposition party to object to the pronouncement.

In a statement released by the General Secretary of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the Petition filed by the NDC "details serious violations of the 1992 Constitution by the Electoral Commission and its Chairperson and Returning Officer for the Presidential Election, Mrs Jean Adukwei Mensa in the conduct of their constitutional and legal responsibilities.”

This is the second time Ghana's election results declared by the electoral body has been objected by the biggest opposition party - the NPP in 2012 took similar approach but ended up accepting the ruling of the Supreme Court which favoured the incumbent NDC government then.
