John Cena is ready to say goodbye to the sport that propelled him to stardom. The wrestler-turned-actor revealed during World Wrestling Entertainment's "Monday in the Bank" event that he will retire from the company next year.

John Cena announced his retirement from wrestling

Cena, 47, is a sixteen-time WWE world champion. Some members of the audience booed his announcement. He thanked the audience "for letting me play in the house that you built for so many years."

"WWE is full of storylines. "It's a continuous cycle of stories ending and new stories beginning," Cena stated at a press conference following the event. "I've never been really bothered with the term 'legacy,' and I don't want you to confuse meanings here: it doesn't imply that I waste any second on the canvas.

I hope I could do it indefinitely. Now I just want to try to do something exceptional for a global community to whom I owe everything.

Cena stated that he intends to do 30 to 40 concerts through 2025 as the end of his wrestling career, which began in 2000. He had previously discussed retirement, and during the press conference, he stated that the timing now felt ideal.

"The business is at incredible heights of popularity and awareness," according to Cena. "There are some big things going on, especially the Netflix debut [in January 2025], and I take pride in being someone WWE can call up and say, 'Remember that idea?'" The time is now.

Let's do something that will bring us all together. His 16 championships are tied with legendary wrestler Ric Flair for the most in the profession, and while many have retired and returned, Cena insists that next year will be his last. "People say they're walking away, and two years later they come back," he stated.

"I want to make it clear right now: I'm done. "This is it." Since earning notoriety in the WWE, Cena has found success on the big screen in films including "Barbie," "The Suicide Squad," and the "Fast & Furious" series.
