The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in collaboration with the Northern Regional Command of the Ghana Immigration Service has held a three-day training program for immigration officers.

The training commenced yesterday 24th February and it’s expected to be completed on 26th February 2021.

The training aims at equipping officers with skills to deal with irregular migration.

Fourteen (14) officers have had the opportunity to enhance their capacity building in Information Technology.

According to the Northern Regional Commander of Ghana Immigration Service ACI Mr. Edward Kofi Owusu the Tamale migration information center, has seen over one hundred and forty-eight people visit the center for various services, that is; provision of timely and accurate information to prospective travelers, traumatized, returnees, victims of trafficking among others.

He said the fact that trends in migration keep changing officers have to be trained occasionally to keep them abreast with changing trends.

It is against this backdrop that the training from IOM which intends to equip officers with skills to deal with irregular migration cannot be said to come at any better time than now especially in this new normal Covid-19 dangerous times.

The Ghana Immigration Service as gatekeepers of Ghana has selected gallant officers and men working on 24-hour border patrol duties along the numerous unapproved routes.

He commended the IOM for the workshop stating that the training will equip officers to carry on their duties smoothly.

“I believe assisting to increase the capacities of these officers is a laudable effort which the government of Ghana and Immigration Service is most grateful to our benefactors.”
