Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool need to be at their total best to be able to succeed against Atletico Madrid at the Estadio Metropolitano on Tuesday night.

Atletico Madrid welcome Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg and according to the German, the Spanish side give ‘absolutely no presents’ therefore it will take hard work to thrive at their home grounds.

"If there's one team where you have to be at your absolute best, it's Atlético. They give you absolutely no presents. If you work as hard as possible, you have a chance. If you don't do that, you have no chance."

Liverpool won last season’s Champions League trophy at the Estadio Metropolitano and have good memories to recall after thriving over their English counterparts, Tottenham Hotspurs by 2-0, kind courtesy of a Mohamed Salah early penalty and Origi’s late goal.

With the masters of the venue in line to face the Reds, Klopp feels that Liverpool’s definition as Champions matters no more since it is a new race searching for a new champion hence the need to preserve that to be at Istanbul.

"[Atlético Madrid] haven't played against a team like us. We shouldn't forget that. We are organized as well, we play football, we have different aspects of the game. We don't feel like the winners of the Champions League last season, we are one of the contenders for this year. We want to be in Istanbul."

When asked on his emotional dramatic display at the touchline, Klopp refused to rule that out and disclosed that Diego Simeone is three times intense than him.

"People say I'm emotional on touchline, but if I'm level four then Diego [Simeone] is level 12. I'm the kindergarten cop compared to him!" he said

It's really like I'm the Kindergarten Cop against him.

"That's over all those years, eight years, that's really long and still having this emotional level, wow, that's absolutely impressive.

“His teams are always world-class organized, so that makes him one of the best. We met once or twice, exchanged some messages after big defeats or big wins and tomorrow in a really competitive game we meet for the first time, it will be interesting."
