The General Secretary hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Charles Onuawonto Bissue, has outlined plans to help the party to win more parliamentary seats in the 2024 general elections if he is given the mandate to win the position of the General Secretary in the upcoming national executive's committee (NEC) election.
Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM's Ekosii Sen political flagship program in Accra on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, Mr. Bissue who doubles as a member of the Council of the NPP pointed out that he is qualified to be elected the new General Secretary of the NPP. to help improve electoral fortunes of the NPP.
He stressed that one of the major political policies and strategies he would pursue was to devise innovative measures to lead the various parliamentary candidates on the tickets of the NPP to win their seats and help them to consolidate those seats which cannot be taken over from them forever by their rivals parliamentary candidates on the tickets of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Mr. Bissue stated that "l did not understand why the NPP parliamentary seats which have increased to 169 would have to reduce drastically to 137 seats in the 2020 general elections.
According to him, the huge reduction in the parliamentary seats of the NPP MPs attests to the fact that there is something wrong happening somewhere at that time for which the party needs to adopt corrective measures to prevent such problems from reoccurring.
The last solution to address such a problem, according to Mr. Bissue who doubles as the Western Regional Secretary of the NPP, was for the delegates of the party to vote massively for him to win the position of the General Secretary of the party since he has what it takes to address the problem.
He discounted the notion that there are borrowed parliamentary seats in Ghana's body politics.
"I am saying that l don't know anything like borrowed parliamentary seats, l must say with the authority that there is nothing like borrowed seats in Ghanaian politics," Mr. Bissue stressed.
"If you have gone to the opposition for eight years and by God willing, you come back and get more MP seats over your opponent. I think that once you grab the seats within a short period, you must work hard to manage and consolidate them to be yours forever," Mr. Bissue told the host of the program.
Additionally, he stressed that "So l am saying that l bringing new ideas on board to help facilitate the political ambition of MPs and new potential parliamentary candidates of the NPP to win their seats, thereby consolidating them if l am given the nod."
Supporting his claims, Mr. Bissue called for effective change in the national leadership of the party.
Effective leadership, he stressed was the only way to reposition the party firmly as the ruling political party, adding that the NPP cannot break eight years rule cycle with the present state of affairs at its national level.
