Timo Werner has admitted Liverpool’s interest in him has made him proud after notching RB Leipzig’s winner at Tottenham on Wednesday night.

The Germany international scored the only goal of the game as the Bundesliga outfit recorded a 1-0 win in north London in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.

Werner has been strongly tipped to make a move to the Premier League over the past 18 months, with Liverpool known to have been leading the charge for the young attacker.

And after the match in north London, Werner was directly questioned over the Anfield links and he revealed that he is proud to be mentioned in the same breath of the club.

“Yes I know that Liverpool is the best team in the world at the moment,” he said.

“When you’re linked with that team it makes you very proud but in case of that, it’s a pleasure.

“But I know Liverpool have a lot of good players.

“I have to improve myself and to learn much more things to get on this level and to play there.”

The 23-year-old, who has also been linked with Manchester United and Chelsea, netted his 26th goal of the season in just 32 appearances and currently has a release clause of just £50m.

Meanwhile, Norwegian pundit Jan Aage Fjortoft has claimed that Liverpool is the most likely destination for Werner this summer, adding that there is “no sign” of any interest from Bayern Munich in the striker.
