I did not only name it, I created Hiplife - Reggie Rockstone

Grandfather of hiplife has asserted that he didn’t just name hiplife, he originated it.

Ghanaian Hiplife guru, Reggie Rockstone, has emphatically affirmed that he did not only name the Hiplife genre but he also created it, claiming that his tag as "Grandfather' of hiplife is not for nothing as he has exclusive rights to the genre as the Progenitor.

Reggie stated that he has never claimed to be the progenitor of any other genre as people have been claiming that he demanded that he brought rap music to Ghana. When asked whether he has heard people say that he did not found rap music in Ghana, he made known that he has never asserted to have brought rap to Ghana.

Speaking on the phone in an interview on Happy FM’s Showbiz Xtra, Reggie said “What I brought is hiplife and when it is being said, it should be said well. I didn’t just come to name it, and go back abroad but I worked on it”, he said.

“It has never even been a debate about the origination of hiplife. If you ask anyone from the young to the old, who doesn’t know where hiplife came from?"

“If they try to argue and you ask them who brought it, then they stare blank at you. They’ve never been able to tell who else started hiplife besides me. Never. I’m old school. During my time, if you put out a song and people love and patronize it a lot, that’s all the award you need. If you go somewhere and people are happy when your song is played, that’s your award”.

He repeated again that since he started from his song ‘tsooboi’ to ‘11-11’ with Sarkodie, down till date, he has been working on Hiplife and he has never given up.

The ‘eye me de anaa” originator was honored with the Outstanding Achievement Award at the just ended 2020 edition of the 3music awards.
