The Majority leader of Ghana’s Parliament, Hon. Kyei Mensah Bonsu has informed the public that Ghana’s Energy sector is misspending electrical power due to outdated electrical cables from Power Distribution Centers.

He educated Ghanaians that the Demand of Energy in the country is 2,700 megawatts yet the difference between the amount of energy being drawn into distribution zones and how much is picked up on meters for use by end customers is 500 megawatts. He defined the problem as technical deficiencies from the distribution center to the Ghana Energy Commission (GECO) before being processed to the Electricity Company (ECG) for power distribution.

The Technical shortage was disclosed as the means behind the history of the electrical wiring creating 'fear' in the future of Ghana's Energy sector.

“Our demand for Energy is 2,700 megawatts yet about 500 go waste as a result of old transmission wires. The cables connected from the distribution places to GECO and then to ECG are old so most of the power disappear by the time they reach the homes of individuals and industries,” he said on Kumasi based Angel FM on Monday.

The Member of Parliament of Suame Constituency apportioned part of the responsibility to civilians for ‘cheating’ on the government through ignorant use of power. He explained that majority of industries and citizens consume Energy without the consent of the Electricity Company of Ghana therefore they deny paying bills which at the end of the month goes against the government.

The 59-year old further made known that former President Mahama’s emergency power plans in his term of office was not needed to regulate the electrical crises then.

“President Rawlings during his term had established the Kpong and Aboadzie power plant for the purpose of Power generation. Kpong and Aboadzie combined, produced 850 megawatts of power as the Akosombo Dam was generating 900”.

He continued that the former president Kufuor’s administration before leaving office generated 1100 megawatts through the Energy initiatives he put up therefore the National Dmocratic Congress only needed to complete what both former presidents started to stabilize the Energy sector.

“Had they embarked on the same approach of president Kufuor, Ghana would not have suffered ‘Dumsor’ as it happened,” he revealed.

He made known that he is scared of the future of Ghaa's Energy Sector.
