Hon. Kennedy Kankam must not go unopposed - Polling Station Executives at Nhyiaeso Constituency laments
Charles Oduro, secretary of Nhyiaeso constituency

Polling Station Executive Members and Opinion Leaders within the Nhyiaeso constituency have appealed to the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to provide answers as to why Hon. Kennedy Kankam is allowed to go unopposed.

The Nhyiaeso Member of Parliament was expected to be challenged by Mr. Stephen Amoah, an aspiring parliamentary candidate in the parliamentary primaries put on hold by party executives due to the ban on social gathering as means to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement released and signed by Charles Oduro, for Concerned Polling Station Executives and Opinion Leaders in the constituency, a rumor with enough substance based on a report made by the second Vice Chairman of the NPP, Mr. F.F. Anto on the resignation of the parliamentary aspirant cannot be accepted if palpable explanations are not rendered.

“To our utter surprise, we do not understand why Mr. Stephen Amoah who has contributed immensely to our great party both at constituency and national levels should be asked by some bigwigs of the party to step down for Hon. Kennedy Kankam to go unopposed at Nhyiaeso Constituency.

“This is totally unacceptable in our political dispensation,” he spoke.

At a press conference organized at the Marigold Lodge behind Christian Service University College at Santasi, Kumasi on Tuesday, May 26, 2020, the secretary of Nhyiaeso constituency, Mr. Charles Oduro stated Article 12 of the NPP constitution, which outlines the process of selecting parliamentary candidates to justify his course.

He explained that the aspiring parliamentary candidate “has exhausted all the process regarding picking and submission of nominations forms, payment of appropriate fees, vetting and balloting in which Mr. Stephen aka Sticka is occupying the first position on the ballot paper.”

They accused the incumbent MP to have brought discord and discrimination among party leaders and polling station executives, which in other ways has affected the progress of the constituency.

“The Honorable Member of Parliament whom everybody expects him to be a unifier has brought division in the Constituency. There has been discrimination in leadership among coordinators, polling station Executives, and Assembly Members in the distribution of items meant for advancing the course of the constituency.

“This has adversely affected the development of the constituency and lowered enthusiasm among the constituents,” he read.

“As we speak, about 400 Polling Station Executive Members out of 635 members and countless opinion leaders do not support the idea of making the incumbent Member of Parliament go unopposed,” he added.

The Executives pleaded to the President and the leadership of the Party to reconsider the alleged decision and allow Mr. Stephen Amoah to participate in the parliamentary primaries election of the constituency.
