Heavy police presence amid Kenya protests

In an effort to stop demonstrations that the opposition has called because of the high cost of living and alleged election fraud, Kenya's riot police are on the streets of Nairobi.

The biggest informal settlements in the city, Kibera and Mathare, are also heavily policed, preventing protesters from entering the city center.

According to reports, a crowd attacked a vehicle transporting neighborhood journalists in Kibera, and the people inside were robbed at knifepoint.

Due to business owners' fears of looting, shops in downtown Nairobi have been shuttered.

Tear gas has been used to disperse crowds of demonstrators who were being led by their local governor in the opposition stronghold of Kisumu in western Kenya.

Police have said they will take pictures of protesters and file charges against them for participating in illegal protests.
