The Bono Regional Manager of the Forest Server Division (FSD), Mr Isaac Noble Eshun has disclosed that they will exceed the target given to them under the Green Ghana project.

According to him the Bono Region which is made up of twelve Districts is expected to plant 250,000 trees in the region as part of the Green Ghana initiative, however, they are about to exceed the target given to them.

The Forestry Commission, through the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, has launched the Green Ghana Project to plant five million trees across the country tomorrow Friday, June 11, 2021, as part of effort to re-Green Ghana and protect the country’s forest reserves.

The project forms part of activities to mark this year’s International Day of Forest.

The Green Ghana initiative will officially commence on June 11, 2021, to encourage Ghanaians to plant more trees to preserve and protect the country’s forest cover and the environment.

According to Mr Isaac Noble Eshun, thousands of seedlings made up mahogany, tick and acacia among other different tree species had already been distributed to the various proposed planting sites across the regions.

He explained the Green Ghana initiative, form part of effort to encourage Ghanaians to plant more trees to preserve and protect Ghana's forest cover and the environment.

Mr Eshun said the rationale for more trees in Ghana formed part of a strategy and a programme to embark on an aggressive aforestation to protect forests and the environment in Ghana. He said the initiative was a joint responsibility for which more broad-based support was needed to address the adverse degradation of Ghana’s forests and ecosystem.

He indicated that this program was an initiative of President Akuffo Addo to restore the country’s forest reserve since half of the country‘s forest reserves have been destroyed by human activities.

He said the President had a vision for the Forestry Commission and the forestry sector which required that FC worked with all stakeholders to increase the country’s forest cover and ensure the protection of the environment.

He said they have taken data of every individual who came for the seedlings and his outfit will ensure that those individuals use it for its intended purpose.

He said the database will help them to track those who came for the seedlings to know whether they made good use of the seedlings. He said those who are not able to make good use of the seedlings will face their wrath since they will cause financial loss to the state. He pleaded with all Ghanaians to participate in the programme.

However, the Sunyani Assistant District Manager for the Forestry Commission, Sophia Anobaa Sarpee advised those who came for the seedlings to avoid using weedicide in planting to prevent the trees from dying.
