The Government of Ghana through the forestry commission initiated the Green Ghana Project in 2021 aimed at reducing deforestation in Ghana to improve the weather condition.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Wenchi, Hon. Alexander Obour Damoah has charged inhabitants of the municipality to ensure the sustainability of the Green Ghana Day, a tree-planting campaign, initiated by His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo, as he led stakeholders to plant 10,000 trees to mark the day at Wenchi ASWAQ Islamic basic school.

Honorable Alexander Obour Damoah planted the first tree.

 Speaking at a brief ceremony to mark the day, the MCE noted that the Green Ghana day has now become an annual event that seeks to mobilize all stakeholders to undertake a massive nationwide tree planting exercise to reduce deforestation and land degradation and combat climate change.  

" It is our fervent expectation that we will not go to sleep after today's exercise but will continue to plant trees and ensure that we safeguard our environment for our sustenance"

 He called on Ghanaians to eschew the attitude of indiscriminate cutting of trees around us while we make no efforts to replace same.

Let us be responsible towards our environment and respect it for our own sake and future generations he added.

He, therefore, implores all stakeholders especially, Traditional authorities, the Clergies, the Imams, congregations, corporate bodies, businesses, and various associations to team up with the assembly to continue to undertake tree planting exercises on regular basis to sustain the Green Ghana project initiative on the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo.

Both public and private schools, Governmental institutions, including the security services, churches, mosques, corporate bodies, civil society organizations, and individuals were given the seedlings by the Wenchi Municipal Assembly through the forestry commission to plant at their premises and homes.

The seedlings distributed include teak, mahogany, cassia, ram, empire,cedrella, mango, coconut, cashew, guava, and orange among other trees.
