Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has appealed to the Ministry of Transport to lessen legal driving age to 21 years in order to employ much people into the driving sector.

The inspiration behind the petition is to keep busy the youth in the driving commercial vehicle to control unemployment and contribute to job creation.

With the age for Traffic Commercial Vehicles at 25 and 18 for private vehicles according to the Road Traffic Regulations 2012, the Acting General Secretary of the Union, Mr George Ofori David believe that three years in addition to the maturity age (18) in Ghana was enough time for any sound person to drive a commercial car.

He revealed on Starr FM yesterday that trimming down the age limit would also control the high unemployment rate Ghana is facing adding that most of the youth have the passion for driving commercial vehicles yet due to age limit, they are unable to be employed rendering them jobless as they wander in occupations they have no knowledge about.

The National Chairman of the union, Mr Kwame Kuma spoke that the GPRTU will consistently engage the Transport Ministry to make sure that the age requirement is reduced within the possible time. He addressed that the current age limit is giving rise to age cheating in the transport sector.
