The Chairman of the Garu Branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU)  in the Upper East Region, Gadafi Mohammed, has attributed the rampant road accidents in Ghana to fatigued.

According to him, tiredness on the part of drivers traveling across the length and breadth of the country is the main cause of the fatal accidents.

His comment follows a reported head-on collision on Buipe-Tamale Highway between two Yutong buses killing over 18 persons and injuring more than 45 others.

He said the drivers do not get enough rest before they take off.

when those drivers traveling from Accra to the northern region get instead of them staying overnight in Kumasi so they can have some rest and continue the next day, they don't stop at all. this kind of attitude is very dangerous, it has been the cause of accidents on our roads.

He further expressed concern over the situation where most buses travel long distances relying on one driver.

Mr. Mohammed however has called on the leadership of the GPRTU branch especially in Kumasi and Accra to enforce regulations that will ensure that drivers who arrive at their stations are not allowed to load passengers and return immediately.

He said “Any driver that comes and wants to return the same day, you must not allow him to go go.
