The wife of the Cross River State Governor, Dr Linda Ayade, has kicked off the health insurance scheme also known as Ayade Care.

The event took place on Tuesday, December 14, 2021, at the Primary Health Care facility at Big Qua in Calabar.

Speaking at the event she said “I cannot over emphasise the importance of the scheme. We will continue to deliver the best of health care for the people of Cross River State.”

According to her, ill-health happens suddenly, adding “it is not something we prepare for. I cannot wait to hear that ‘I walked into a health facility and was treated.'”

She urged the people of Cross River to key into the scheme to take advantage of the many benefits.

Speaking earlier, the state Commissioner for Health Dr Betta Edu, said registration attracts N1,000 per month and N12,000 a year.

“All of us can work together to ensure that at least one million Cross Riverians register. If Nigeria can achieve universal health coverage, I will die a happy person,” she said.

Also speaking, the Director-General of state Primary Health Care Development Agency, Janet Ekpenyong said, “Health insurance is the most sustainable way of funding health. We will continue to show commitment to providing health care to the people.”

The Ayade Care Health Scheme is compulsory for all residents of the state, all employees in the private and public sectors, including self-employed (formal and informal sectors), all students — primary, secondary, tertiary, the elderly, retirees and unemployed.

The scheme, among others, protects residents from financial hardship associated with huge medical bills.
