Former president John Mahama has advised Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo to relieve other welfare schemes from the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to be able to serve the purpose at which it was intended to.

The NHIS, a social intervention program introduced by government to provide financial access to quality health care for residents in Ghana. The scheme was founded under the former president John Agyekum Kufuor’s administration and has grown rapidly to more than 11 million subscribers compared to the former 1 million.

According to the flagbearer of the NDC, his government used 10 percent of the Annual Budget Funding (ABFA) from the oil revenue to support the NHIS yet the Akufo –Addo’s New Patriotic Party’s regime has introduced a Funds Capping and Realignment Act, which diverts a percentage of the scheme funds for other uses.

"Government should exempt the National Health Insurance Scheme from the Capping and Realignment so that we can have enough money to cater for the subscribers to the health insurance," he advised.

Mr. Mahama conveyed these words speaking at the 13 th Annual Residential Congress of the National Health Students Association of Ghana at Korle Bu in Accra. The three day congress, themed; ““Quality Health Education and Sustainable Employment; Reviewing the Past and Present to Repair the Future” will end on Saturday, September 28, 2019.

He advised the various student movements to continue making valuable contributions to the progress of the country, recalling their contribution to the setting up of the Ghana Education Trust Fund, GETFund.

"Since the establishment of the GET Fund, it has been the single largest contributor to educational infrastructure in the history of Ghana," he added.
