A child-interest doctor has cautioned nursing mothers that giving babies below 6 months water can cause intoxication.

This, according to the Chief Executive Officer, of BO Regenerative Medical Clinic at Pokuase within the Greater Accra Region, Dr. Boanerges Kwashie Nkosana Nartey would not inure to the growth pattern of babies.

He noted that at the age of 6months in a baby's life,    water could cause what he termed hyponatremia, which at its most dangerous stage, causes brain swelling.

He added that brain swelling results in death, therefore, urging parents, particularly nursing mothers to refrain from doing so.

Dr. Nartey said the information regarding babies at their early age, ought to be taken seriously to help the baby's development. 

Dr. Boanerges Kwashie Nkosana Nartey was speaking in an exclusive interview with Soireenews.com causing nursing mothers and any baby-interest individuals.

He bemoaned the practice of some people disregarding what he termed, "right information" adding, that it might damage the beautiful life of their baby.

"Let us all learn from simple things to save a baby's destiny", he admonished.

He said those who ignore beneficial information, would unknowingly damage innocent babies and therefore should pay particular attention to the advice.

"I maintained that giving a baby who is less than 6 months water is not advisable therefore, care must be taken", he reiterated.

"Even if water must be given to a baby at that age, then just one teaspoon or tablespoon scale must be given", he further cautioned.

He is rather the right age (6 months) to start introducing the child to the concept that thirst can be quenched with water.

He, however, revealed that the baby's main source of hydration should continue to be breast milk or what he termed formula.

Dr. Nartey further disclosed that most babies at that stage early lives would see water as a novelty and therefore prefer their milk.

He said some babies might balk at the taste of water if they were expecting something else.

At age one, he said babies could now be offered water in appreciable quantities as they may desire but that should be accompanied by cow's milk and a nutritious diet.
