Old Students of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) have welcomed the decision by the management of the institution to rescind its decision directing students who failed to meet the deadline for the payment of fees to defer their courses.

The about 100 students who were affected by the school’s decision have expressed satisfaction with the opportunity given them to continue their education without interruptions.

“We are very grateful for management for this and the students are very happy about this new development,” a spokesperson for the old students’, Naa Mintah told Soiree  News on phone.

Management of the institute, the first of its kind south of the Sahara in Africa, backtracked on its earlier decision following a protest by students and outrage by the general public.

The protesting students picketed in front of the institute’s Osu-Ringway campus on Wednesday, March 24, 2021. Management extended the deadline for three previous times before the February 25 deadline.

This resulted in a 24-week payment window.

Students were supposed to make a payment of the minimum 60 percent of fees and subsequent registration.

Naa Minta urged students who had not paid to take advantage of the new opportunity.

“For those who have paid and those who have not paid, I think it is a good working standard for the student body”, she added.
