Ghana Water Company Educates Students On Water Conservation Amid Growing Concerns Over Finite Resources

In commemoration of World Water Day 2025, the Ghana Water Company Limited Accra West hosted an educational tour for students of Odorgonno Senior High School at the Weija Treatment Plant.

The tour, led by the regional manager Ing. Emmanuel Johnson, aimed to educate the students on the importance of water conservation and the role they can play in protecting Ghana's water resources.

Ing. Johnson emphasized that water conservation is crucial for the country's sustainability, highlighting the challenges facing Ghana's water bodies, including illegal mining, sand winning, and pollution. He warned that continued misuse of water resources could lead to severe shortages, potentially forcing communities to seek water from increasingly distant sources at higher costs.

The company faces significant challenges, including infrastructure leakages, illegal water connections, and commercial losses that threaten water supply. Key issues include aging pipeline infrastructure, unauthorized water connections, and environmental degradation from illegal mining activities.

To address these challenges, the Ghana Water Company is urging citizens to support conservation efforts by paying water bills, using available payment channels, and practicing responsible water usage. The company recommends infrastructure upgrades, stricter enforcement against illegal water use, and public education to ensure sustainable water management for future generations.

As population growth increases water demand, protecting this vital resource becomes increasingly critical. The Ghana Water Company hopes that by educating the younger generation, they can inspire positive change and ensure a sustainable future for Ghana's water resources.

On her part, Solace A. M. Akomeah, Accra West Communications Manager of Ghana Water Ltd., delivered a compelling presentation on water conservation to students of Odorgonno SHS.

Communication Manager, Akomeah highlighted the alarming consequences of water wastage, revealing that simple daily habits can lead to significant water and financial losses.

She demonstrated that leaving a tap running while brushing teeth can waste up to one gallon of water per minute, translating to approximately $24.89 in annual water costs.

To combat water waste, Akomeah shared essential conservation tips, including turning off taps when not in use, checking for leaks, taking shorter showers, and using water-efficient shower heads.

"Every drop matters," Akomeah emphasized, stressing that small individual actions can collectively make a substantial impact on water resource management.

The event was part of the company's efforts to commemorate World Water Day 2025, which is celebrated annually on March 22nd. The global theme for this year is "Glacier Preservation," highlighting the critical role of glaciers in sustaining life and the water cycle.
