Ghana places dozens under isolation due to Marburg virus worries

34 persons have been placed in quarantine by the Ghanaian health authorities as a result of two suspected instances of the Marburg virus, a contagious illness related to Ebola.

Those who were being watched were connected to the suspected instances through contacts.

The Ashanti Region of southern Ghana's Ashanti region has reported two possible Marburg outbreaks, which the health officials say they are closely monitoring.

Officials declared that two individuals who had since passed away had tested positive for the virus.

These would be the first cases ever reported in Ghana and the second in all of West Africa if verified.

Diarrhea, fever, nausea, and vomiting are some of the symptoms. The virus is spread among humans by direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals, infected surfaces, and infected objects. It is transmitted from fruit bats.

The Pasteur Institute in Senegal has received samples for further analysis.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and Ghanaian officials are carrying out more investigations and have started making plans to stop the potential outbreak.
