Ghana Parliament to Sanction MPs Who Refuse To Test For Covid-19

The Parliament of Ghana will sanction Members of Parliament (MPs) and parliamentary staff who refuse to mandatorily test for the coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

The Speaker of Parliament, Prof Aaron Mike Ocquaye gave the warning, addressing the House on Tuesday [May 26, 2020]

Last week Parliament started an exercise to test all MPs and staff of the Parliamentary Service for COVID-19, in its bid to prevent possible spread of the disease in the legislative institution.

Per reports from Graphic Online, the Speaker warned that any MP or staff who refuses to undertake the mandatory test would be sanctioned.

It has been agreed that results of the tests will not be made public.

Rather they will be communicated to the individual MPs and appropriate action taken where necessary.

In related developments, a statement from Parliament has refuted the reportage by Starrfmonline which suggested that two MPs and 13 staff of the lawmaking chamber have tested positive for Covid-19 after testing.

The statement, signed by the head of the Public Affairs Department of Parliament, Ms Kate Addo, said the result of the covid-19 testing exercise is yet to be known.

Parliament has ordered Starrfm to accordingly retract the publication.
