Virologist at the Kumasi Center for Collaborative Research, Dr. Michael Owusu has revealed that Ghana is ahead of the novel coronavirus due to the effective contact tracing method employed by government.

According to Dr. Owusu, although the number of cases are high yet Ghanaians should be much concerned with the minimum number of deaths chronicled.

The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo lifted the partial lockdown on some Covid-19 hotspot areas in the country which was necessitated by the spread of the disease.

The president said the ease of restrictions was “in view of our ability to undertake aggressive contact tracing of infected persons” among others mentioning that the enhancement of testing capacity, increased local production of PPEs and “the severe impact on the poor and vulnerable” is needful to help curb the virus.

Speaking on Kwame Tanko’s Angel in the Morning on Thursday, April 23, 2020, the virologist made known that Ghana is ahead in Africa on contact tracing due to the Health Service premediated reading to restrain the virus through the mandatory quarantine, voluntarily testing and self-isolation measures.

“The government is putting up these measures to make sure the virus is controlled. We have to stick the social distancing directives, the covering of nose and mouth with masks and applying alcohol based sanitizers.

“There are measures we are utilizing to make the country safe yet if Ghanaians does not observe the measures put in place by the Health Service, things will be tough for us. That is why the president deemed it necessary to lift the lock down since these measures are the safest,” he said.

Reflecting on the deaths of other African nations hit with the pandemic, Dr. Owusu made known that Ghana is ahead of the virus due to how cases are managed resulting to minimal deaths.

Ghana’s has recorded 120 recovery cases with 9 deaths.
