The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists is blaming the media and other stakeholders for the continuous suppression in the health sector.

The National Public Relations Officer of the Association, Dennis Adu-Gyasi made the observation in an interview with Ark News on Monday, May 24, 2021, monitored by Soiree News.

The decision is in solidarity with their members at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) who began a one-week sit-down strike last week to protest the posting of two medical officers to the Laboratory Services Directorate of the hospital.

Mr Adu-Gyasi indicated that several factors have contributed to the suppression of the Laboratory Scientists of which he blames the key aspect on stakeholders including the media.

He bemoaned how the media mostly refer to them as mere ‘lab technicians’ despite their advancement in the field of their job. This according to him is a deliberate ploy to subdue the laboratory, which he describes as unacceptable.

Mr Adu-Gyasi wants stakeholders to appropriately recognize their position in the health sector and due respect be given them. He added, “what is happening at KATH is an affront on the practice of medical laboratory science in Ghana”.

The Association said since the leadership of Komfo Anokye has refused to grant the request of its members; they will take the issue up and escalate the industrial action on a national scale.

Touching on how different this strike is and how optimistic they are of getting the issue resolved, he noted that same action was taken against the leadership of Korle-bu Teaching Hospital when a similar issue happened and it was settled.
