The Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Nigeria collaborating with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has vowed to proceed with its planned strike and protest with effect from September 28 following the failure of the Federal Government to reverse the hike in electricity tariff and fuel price.

The TUC in a statement made available to Legit disclosed that Nigerians should get themselves ready for what is coming.

The statement released by Comrade Quadri Olaleye, the president of TUC and its secretary-general, Musa-Lawal Ozig, partly read: "We want to use this opportunity to call on Nigerians, especially those in the informal sector to bear with us while the industrial action lasts.

"There is no need for the pains we bear. It is a needless one. They ask us to tighten our belts while they loosen theirs. Services are not rendered yet we are compelled to pay estimated bills."

The unions complain that until now, not less than eight states have refused to pay the minimum wage agreed upon by the government.

The TUC and the NLC lamented: "As at today, about eight states are yet to commence the payment of new minimum wage and its consequential adjustment even though the president signed it into law on April 18, 2019.

"We have written letters to the governors and also engaged them in dialogue but all to no avail. Sometimes we wonder if these people have conscience at all."

It was learnt that the labour unions in the country were planning to go on strike over the recent increase in the price of petrol.

The NLC and the TUC were reportedly consulting civil society allies and relevant organs of labour towards the planned strike.
