The Forestry Commission of Ghana through its Deputy Chief Executive Officer, (CEO) Mr Sule Nyadia Nelson has provided over 15,000 mahogany seedlings to the Mole National Park in the West Gonja Municipality of the Savannah region as part of the Green Ghana Day Project.

Presenting the seedlings to the management of the park, the deputy CEO lamented over the state of destruction depleting the forest reserve of the park.
He is optimistic that the idea to plant more trees will restore the lost vegetation for the country.

“You may be aware that vegetation of this country especially areas off reserves have dwindled over the last three (3) decades due to massive destruction”, Mr Sule Nyadia said.

The tree-planting project initiation by the government in all parts of Ghana would help the Mole National Park to properly demarcate its boundaries and also improve its forest reserve.

The country is set to plant 5million trees as part of the ‘Green Ghana Day Project' to rescue the lost vegetation with negative impact affecting the environment in the wake of climate change.

A recall by President Nana Akufo-Addo urged all Ghanaians to support the government to restore the lost vegetation in his state of the nation address.

It, therefore, necessitated the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources took it up to implement the government’s intention of ‘Green Ghana Day' through the Forestry Commission.

The idea is to implement the planting of 5million trees by the 11th June 2021 across the length and breadth of the country. This idea is to create an attitude for Ghanaians to embrace tree planting.

Mr Sule Nyadia said it is an opportunity for Wildlife staff and other staff of the Forestry Commission to join the rest of Ghanaians to make this novel dream a reality.

He indicated that the project will provide good vegetative cover for the country in order to help improve agriculture and its related activities in the country.

He further explained that in countries where they have good vegetation cover, they turn to be wealthier than countries with poor vegetation cover.

The Savannah region is one of the destruction places when it comes to falling tree species for commercial purposes depleting the forest reserve.

The plantation target for the Savannah region is estimated at about 250,000 trees.

The Deputy CEO mince no words in support of the actions by Gonja Traditional Council with its people to stop illegal logging and commercial charcoal production in the region.

Eulogizing the gesture, the Manager of Mole National Park Mr Ali Mahama expressed gratitude to the Forestry Commission authorities for providing to the park 15,000 mahogany seedlings for planting across the boundaries of the park.

“The boundaries of Mole National Park consist of 300km and we want to use these 15,000 mahogany seedlings to plant across 90KM of mole National Park, that is about 166 seedlings per KM.

"We are very happy the deputy CEO, Sule Nyadia Nelson, is here to begin the process in commemoration of the Green Ghana Day which will be launched on June 11, 2021, by the president of Ghana,” he said.

Mr Ali indicated that the mahogany species were carefully selected because the species will grow to serve as marks and show a clear distinction between the boundaries of the park and off-reserve areas.

He also said the trees would as well help protect the environment.

He taunts the Park’s readiness to mobilize staff to take good care of these tree species.

The deputy CEO and his team have also embarked on official visits to chiefs and other stakeholders to solicit their support and endorsement for the Green Ghana Day project to succeed.

The public is therefore advised to do the planting when there are continual rains to help increase the survival rate of these plants.

The president of the Republic is expected to launch the Green Ghana Day on June 11, 2021.
