Fire Outbreak: Nigerian Firefighters Battles Huge Blaze in Lagos Island

It was reported that a major fire gutted a five-storeyed building housing different businesses at Balogun market, Lagos Island. Despite the effort made by fire service officials to put out the inferno, it has continued to burn into the night.

It has been reported that there has been a major fire outbreak at the Balogun market in Lagos Island on Tuesday.

Nigerian firefighters has been trying to extinguish the fire.

Thick black smoke and flames were seen shouting up from five-story buildings surrounding the market as firetrucks attempt to get access to the fire.

Residents were throwing belongings they could from the buildings and some people on the rooftops were using small buckets of water to try to stop the fire.

A fire truck was also spraying water onto the flames.

The fire started in the morning and became a major blaze by midday.

The Balogun market sprawls across many blocks on Lagos Island. It is well known as one of the best places in Lagos to buy colorful Nigerian fabrics, apparel and shoes.

It was gathered that a policeman was killed at the scene.

It was learnt that a part of the burning building collapsed on the policeman as he was carrying out his official duty of controlling the surging crowd at the scene of the incident.

Part of the six-storey building located at 43 Martins Street, Lagos Island, collapsed around 8:30p.m. on Tuesday as firemen continued spirited efforts at extinguishing the inferno.

According to reports, part of the burning building collapsed on the policeman, severely injuring him while trying to control the surging crowd.
