A 17-year-old boy has been drowned to death and 12 others rescued after swimming in an abandoned stone quarry pit in Gomoa.

A seventeen-year-old boy final year student in the Junior High School level who is in his final year to write the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) has met his untimely death after swimming in a quarry pit.

According to reports the 17-year-old boy, identified as Patrick Nyarko, drowned while 12 others escape death when swimming in an abandoned stone quarry pit went south.

The pit located at Gomoa Asarekrom near Buduburam in the Central Region had been abandoned for five years without any precautionary measures.

An eyewitness Stephen, who spoke to Adom News, said he saw about 15 children head to the site and despite several warnings of danger, he was ignored and they proceeded anyway.

The final year student together with his friends jumped into the quarry pit to swim after it rained.

Stephen said shortly after, he heard wails from that direction, only to be informed one of the boys was drowning.

The incident reached the people of Gomoa-Asarekrom and some men jumped into the quarry pit to rescue the final-year student.

However, the victim was already deceased when the rescue team retrieved him from the water due to the delay.

Meanwhile, the heartbroken father of the deceased, Kweku Owusu, said his son was preparing for his JHS exiting exams.
