FIFA plan coordinated transfer window

No player can play for another team until season is over

FIFA had already made plans for the end of the current football season and the subsequent transfer window by approving plans to extend player contracts that are due to expire on June 30. However, the problem of labor laws, as well as the intentions of clubs and footballers.

As a result, the likelihood is that some will not keep to this plan of extending a contract beyond the aforementioned date.

The power brokers within FIFA are trying to get ahead and find a solution for the next point of conflict which will be the opening of the transfer window in each country. Already a quagmire and that is before governments and league bodies get involved.

As yet, none of the major league federations have indicted to FIFA their plans regarding the window, but those within football's governing body want to set a common date for everyone, especially given the end of each league will be different.

Some have already ended their seasons, such as France and the Netherlands, and others will play until August, while Ligue 1 plans to start in the second week of that month.

The lack of dates has led FIFA to the idea of a uniform start to the transfer window for everyone, or at very least to coordinate it so there are no undue influences to the championships which are still being contested.

Regardless, players who sign for another club will not receive transfer clearance until the league in which they are joining is completed. For example, some LaLiga Santander players have already told their teams they don't intend to stay beyond June 30, but they won't be allowed to play for another team in the championship until next season.

COVID-19 has created many unique situations and there is also the addition of European competition which is due to be played in August, should nothing change.

In this case, players who ended their contracts on June 30 could find themselves being eligible to play in league competition, but not in Europe, as some championships may begin before the Europa League and Champions League have ended.

UEFA will not alter the list of players already registered for each team in those competitions, meaning only those in the squads from February can play in the forthcoming rounds.

Real Madrid though, will be able to play Marco Asensio in the second leg against Manchester City as he was registered.

If any player from teams currently in the European competition signs for another still competing, they will not be able to play for the new team.

This will be a particular headache for the French sides still in Europe and who also have the new season of Ligue 1 beginning.
