EU criticises Eritrea's reported offensive in Tigray

The reported deployment of Eritrean forces into the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia, according to the European Union, will only help to intensify the conflict.

Josep Borrell, head of the EU's foreign affairs and security strategy, said, "The EU once again urges all parties to forget about any military solution and combine efforts for the sake of their communities."

It coincides with a rumored full-scale offensive by Eritrean forces along the border with Tigray.

The Eritreans were battling alongside Ethiopian federal forces and local militia, according to Getachew Reda, the spokesman for the Tigrayan forces.

However, the claimed entry of the Eritrean military has received no comment from either the Ethiopian or the Eritrean governments.

On Tuesday, an American representative denounced the fighting and said that the US was aware of Eritrean troops entering Tigray.

In their nearly two-year-long conflict with Tigrayan rebels, Eritrea has partnered with Ethiopian government troops.

In the course of the battle, thousands of people have died and millions have were displaced.
