Ethiopia PM appoints TPLF head as Tigray president

The recently established interim administration in the northern region of Tigray will be led by Getachew Reda, a senior member of the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), according to Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

Last week, Mr. Getachew was nominated by the TPLF, which waged a two-year civil war against the federal authority.

Fighting claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people, and the conflict resulted in a major humanitarian catastrophe. The US government has accused both sides of committing war crimes.

The action is a component of the implementation of the South African peace accord that the TPLF and the federal government signed.

Up until regional elections are conducted under the control of the electoral commission, the interim regional government will be in place. There is no fixed date yet.

The TPLF was no longer classified as a terrorist organization by Ethiopia's House of Peoples Representatives on Wednesday.
