Fred chases Shaqiri for the ball

Liverpool settled for a point after their goalless draw against first-placed Manchester United.

The Reds have failed to score in a Premier League game for a third successive match yet still hold their unbeaten run at home.

Liverpool dominated the game in the early minutes and were prevented from scoring when Man United players made some tough challenges - Wan-Bissaka, then McTominay threw themselves into tackles that stopped the Champions from getting into any stride early.

United tried to swarm the homeside midfielders as McTominay and Fred tagged team on Wijnaldum but the Reds were smart to move through them only to make poor decisions in the final third of the pitch.

The hosts began finding holes in the visitors’ team - Thiago slipped in Firmino, his shot from outside the box was blocked, before Robertson blazed over from the left of the box, leaning back.

Shaqiri found space again and played a wonderful ball into the box for Mane. He held it up, fed Firmino and despite having Robertson in acres on the left, he went for goal instead but drifted wide.

The Reds increased their dominance and Harry Maguire was found wanting after his pass out from defence was blocked by Firmino for Mane to take over. The Senegalese initiated the cross but Fred's clearance was poor. It fell for Wijnaldum and his effort was then blocked by Maguire, before Shaqiri's cross drifted wide.

United came close after Bruno Fernandes freekick deep in the Reds half flew wide of Alisson's right-hand post.

Salah, in the second half, was denied by Harry Maguire 12 yards out when the Egyptian needed space to shoot. He looked to shuffle it out of his feet for goal, but he shifted it through Maguire's legs with the shot, which deflected wide.

Shaqiri's corner was whipped in dangerously, but it came off McTominay head for another corner which was finally cleared.

Fabinho in the 63-minute had to get in a superb interception to stop Rashford being released after Man Utd break, and Henderson caught quite high.

The Red Devils best chance of the game fell for Rashford after he darted into the box and found Shaw on the overlap on the left of the box. He centred for Fernandes, eight yards out, and his low first-time effort was saved by Alisson's feet.

Thiago responded by running from Fred after finding some space 20 yards out and looked for the top right corner, but De Gea beat it away diving to his right.

The Brazilian keeper denied the visitors for the second time after Pogba slammed Wan Bissaka’s deflected cross goalwards from 10 yards out, yet Alisson's reflexes were good and he beat it away.

The game ended goalless as the two sides shared the point apiece.
