Liverpool were once again denied all three points against a hard-wearing Newcastle defence at the Saint James Park on Wednesday night.

The Reds had their chances but were denied couple of times by a superb Darlow in post for the Magpies who enjoyed 27% of possession.

It was a much-spirited start from the hosts with much better energy who attacked the Reds and kept them at bay from posing early threats.

The first chance of the game fell for Wilson after Matty Longstaff pinged a fine pass over the top and was too strong for Phillips as he breezed past him and went for goal at the near post but Fabinho made a vital block.

Alexander Arnold in the 25-minute released Mane down the left and the hosts got numbers back. Milner eventually spotted the run of the Liverpool right-back in space and all Alexander-Arnold could do was prod his shot comfortably into the gloves of Darlow.

Jurgen Klopp’s side dominated possession but there was nothing too clear for them to score.

Mohamed Salah was played onside by Ritchie as he collected Henderson's pass but the Liverpool forward's left-foot shot was tipped around the post quite superbly by Darlow to deny the visitors.

The reds took it from where they left off in the second half and vigorously attacked Newcastle who gave everything they had to defend every ball in the yard.

Salah should have put the Reds forward after Firmino escaped a couple of challenges before releasing the Egyptian, who caught onto his left foot but his shot was a little wide.

Thiago Alcantara took the place of Milner and injected some pace into the game yet the front three were missing.

Darlow kept denying the Reds off the line on two occasions and ended it all ended in a stalemate.
