Steve Bruce registered his first ever win against Manchester United as a manager in all competitions, in what was his 23rd attempt after Newcastle nipped the Red Devils by a lone goal at the Sports Direct Arena through Matty Longstaff.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made three changes from the side that drew 1-1 with Arsenal on Monday Night Football. Victor Lindelof, Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard were out with Diogo Dalot, Fred and Juan Mata came in.

The three incomings also survived from the XI that were held to a goalless draw by AZ Alkmaar on Thursday, along with David De Gea and Daniel James.

Steve Bruce rung the changes after a 5-0 thrashing by Leicester last weekend. Five players were switched with Matthew Longstaff coming into the side for his Premier League debut, partnering brother Sean in midfield.

Elsewhere, Emil Krafth, Paul Dummett, Issac Hayden, Yoshinori Muto and Christian Atsu were dropped out of the side and replaced by Longstaff, Ciaran Clark, Allan Saint-Maximim, Jetro Willems and DeAndre Yedlin.

Manchester United again struggled at the Sport Direct Arena in the early instants. Saint-Maximin dominated the midfield with his runs and kept playing Almiron down the right of the area. The Newcastle speedster caused a few problems for United’s defense, as Fred was booked for a clip.

Young tried to create something for the Red Devils in the 8-minute by pumping the ball down the field. He searched for the run of Rashford, but by the time the striker got there, the ball was already out of play.

Saint-Maximin continued his superb play in the midfield of the hosts. He darted down the left in the 18-minute, beat Dalot before getting a cross into the area, but Young was there to get it away. United simply could not deal with his pace and power. Newcastle was again denied by the crossbar in the 28-minute.

Saint-Maximin once again picked out the 19-year-old at the top of the area and he curled a sensational effort towards goal, but it pinged off the crossbar before going wide. That was the closest for the Magpies and they kept pressing the Red Devils for the first goal.

Almiron should have done better in another chance for the Magpies. The Newcastle forward run off the back of Young as he received the ball, with no offside flag raised. He stuttered over his finish and allowed Maguire to get back and block the eventual shot.

Steve Bruce side were presented with an early free kick as Saint-Maximin was fouled over on the left. Manchester United defended the set piece out of the area to draw the curtain on the first half.

The Red Devils dominated the second half seeing plenty of the balls but made little effort to create chances to convert them.

Andy Carrol was introduced for Joelinton upfront. The former Liverpool man received a huge ovation, as his expectations were high to score a Newcastle opener. The appearance of the local lad changed Newcastle’s approach upfront. They floated the ball toward Carrol yet Harry Maguire’s height was influential in clearing the balls from his mark.

Matty Longstaff scored his Premier League debut in the 72-minute from outside the box.

Saint-Maximin set off the attack drove through midfield, before picking out Willem on the left. He tricked his way past James in the area and left him on the floor. He caught back for the waiting Matty Longstaff outside the box and he shot a sweet strike that pinged through the area before beating a leaping De Gea.
