EOCO Finally Releases "Troubled" Wontumi After Meeting His Bail Conditions

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has released Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), after he complied with his bail requirements.

On Monday, June 2, Wontumi’s legal team formally retracted a motion asking for a reassessment of his GH¢50 million bail requirement.

The motion was scheduled for consideration on Tuesday, June 3, after it was first filed on May 30, 2025, in the High Court in Accra. But on Monday, June 2, a day earlier, it was withdrawn.

On Wednesday, May 28, he was released on bail with two well-founded sureties. By Friday, May 30, his legal team—headed by Andy Appiah-Kubi—confirmed that the bail requirements had been met.

The ongoing application for bail review, which his attorneys claim was filed without his express authorization, caused his release to be postponed even though he complied with the requirements.

However, following arduous legal proceedings, Wontumi’s attorneys were able to negotiate his release from custody.

Shortly ago, at the EOCO headquarters, Justin Kodua, the general secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), announced the release of the troubled NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman.

“I can confirm that Chairman Wontumi has been released, he’s gone home to relax, we will inform you of any new development. Let’s thank Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi for the support,” he told supporters  at EOCO Monday evening.

After being detained for almost a week, Wontumi is expected to cooperate completely with the ongoing investigations.

According to Justice Srem-Sai, the Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Chairman Wontumi is presently the subject of a significant criminal investigation due to claims of money laundering, fraud, and financial loss to the state.

Dr. Srem-Sai revealed in a post on X (previously Twitter) that the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is in charge of the investigation and that attempts are already being made to retrieve assets that may be connected to illegal conduct.
