Election  2020: Akufo-Addo is number 1; Mahama number two on ballot paper

The presidential candidates contesting the upcoming general elections in Ghana have balloted for positions on the ballot paper.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) picked the first slot while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) picked the second slot for the December general elections.

This was the outcome of the balloting which was conducted by the Electoral Commission (EC) on Tuesday evening [October 2020].

Apart from Madam Akua Donkor of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) who represented herself and picked the number five position, all the other candidates were represented at the balloting.

Of the 12 qualified candidates, 11 are sponsored by political parties, while one is an independent candidate.

The independent candidate, per the EC's convention, did not take part in the balloting and was automatically placed on the bottom of the ballot paper.

Below are the parties and the positions they picked on the ballot paper

3 – Ghana Union Movement

4 – Convention People’s Party

5 – Ghana Freedom Party

6 – Great Consolidated People’s Party

7 – All People’s Congress

8 – Liberal Party Ghana

9 – People’s National Congress

10 – Progressive Peoples Party

11 – National Democratic Party

12 – Independent Candidate

2016 elections ballot position

In the last elections held in 2016, Mr Ivor Kobina Greenstreet of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) was first on the ballot.

At number two was Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings of the National Democratic Party (NDP).

Former President John Dramani Mahama was number three,

At number four was Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) who declined to contest this year.

At number five was President Nana Akufo-Addo of the NPP.

At number six was Dr Edward Mahama of the PNC.

The slot was taken by independent candidate Jacob Osei Yeboah.
