Due to the "worsening" unemployment rate, Obuasi youngsters took to the streets

Scores of residents within Obuasi in the Ashanti Region have gone on a demonstration over what they termed as rising unemployment among the youth in the mining community.

The protestors want the management of Anglogold Ashanti to integrate them into the mining firm.

They carried signs that said things such, as "We are tired of unemployment," "Obuasi has been hit again by the 1983 famine," and other similar things.

After their nonviolent protest, the head of the Obuasi Young Community Mining Association, Emmanuel Kofi Ayamga, addressed the media and urged AGA management to reconsider their employment strategy and take the region's youth into account.

Francis Antoh, the association's secretary, also urged Anglogold Ashanti Obuasi mine management to free up land for mining.

He also suggested that the government support the growth of the mining industry.

Receiving their appeal, the Municipal Chief executive of Obuasi, Elijah Adansi Bonah, promised to send their complaints to the ministries concerned in the mining sector including the Ashanti Regional Minister for a sustainable solution to their difficulties.

He commended them for acting peacefully and told them to be patient until the AGA and government responded.
