The Municipal Chief Executive Office (MCE) of Weija+Gbawe Municipal Assembly in the Greater Accra Region, Mr. Patrick Kwesi Brako Kumor has called on the media practitioners and journalists to be circumspect in their reportage on the tragic death of nine pupils who drowned while returning from school on Wednesday, 10 May 2023 at Faanaa-Bortianor, an island community in the Ga South municipality in Accra.

According to the hardworking MCE, he was unhappy about the way and manner the journalists were reporting the incident by wrongly mentioned Weija enclave as the scene of the boat capsized disaster.

Speaking in an interview with Soireenews.com, on Friday May 12, 2023, Mr Kumor has broken silence by indicating that the current boat disaster occurred at Faanaa-Boatianor in the Ga South municipality under the jurisdiction of Mr Joseph Nyarni Stephen.
"I have spoken to the media practitioners/ journalists to be talking to the Ga South Municipal Assembly in connection of this boat accident but they have been calling me to speak to this issue claiming that the boat accident has happened at Weija.
"...the whole news went viral on social and traditional media platforms claiming that the accident happened at Weija, but it is not Weija. Rather the accident occurred at Fanaa-Bortianot which falls within the catchment area of the Ga South municipality," the Weija-Gbawe MCE vividly explained.
It would be recalled that a 13-year-old, Edinam Ekpe, has recounted how she survived a boat accident that took 9 lives in the Ga South municipality.
The pupils were on the boat transporting them from Faana to Kelee.
The boat, which is said to have capsized, killed the children who are between the ages of 3 and 13.
The report added that the incident took place on Wednesday, May 10, 2023.
The only survivor in the accident narrated that a young boy asked them to join his boat while they had challenges in getting one.
She said when she joined her colleagues, she informed the boat rider he had over-packed them and suggested he takes some of them first and return for the rest but he refused.
She said while they were on the river, the boat subsided killing her colleagues and her kid brother.
“The accident occurred at 5:40 p.m. Yesterday when we were coming home, we didn’t get a boat to pick us but fortunately, we found a young boy on one and told him to pick us up. When he picked us up, I told him we were many on the boat and suggested that he drops some of us and take a fewer number.
“When I told him, he ignored me and said the boat would go. Just when we were going the boat turned and my kid brother fell and went missing but I held on to the boat until a man came to assist me,” she recounted.
