David Luiz has accused his performance as the reason for Arsenal’s 3-0 loss at the Etihad on Wednesday, June 17, 2020, during ‘Project Restart’.

The Brazilian came from the bench in the 24th minute following an injury to Pablo Mari and gave away two goals for Manchester City.

He was also shown the Red card four minutes into the second half after a foul on Riyad Mahrez inside the penalty box. He has imputed his frustration on his inability to extend his contract at Arsenal after it was earlier reported that the player is willing to extend a deal to continue playing at the Emirates.

The irritation of the player’s contractual terms seems to have unsettled Arteta to start the game with 26-year old Pablo Mari who kept the defense integral until his exit after injury.

"It's not the team's fault, it was my fault," he told Sky Sports. "Today I think the team did well, especially with 10 men, the coach is amazing, the players did amazing, it's just my fault.

"I took the decision to play, I should have taken another decision in the last two months, but I didn't. It was all about my contract, whether I stay or not. I have 14 days to be here, and that's it. Today was my fault.

David Luiz signed an initial 12-month contract when he joined on deadline day from Chelsea to replace Laurent Koscielny. He has been featured in all games Arteta has managed since he took over from Unai Emery. It looks like he wishes for a contract extension but Arsenal are not impressed with his performance and does not want a renewal.

"I love to be here, that's why I continue to train hard, that's why I came here today, that's why I've tried to do everything, that's why I'm here putting my face up, that's why I said to the players no one had to speak, I'm happy to show my face and be here,” he added.

"I want to stay, the coach knows, he wants me to stay, and we are just waiting for the decisions."
