The health of residents living in one of the oldest state apartments, Redco Flats at Madina in the Greater Accra Region is in real danger following a foul smell emanating from the recently built commercial lavatory.

Investigations conducted by Soireesnews have revealed that the waste liquid from the facility usually pollutes the air and affects the health of people in the area.

Soireesnews learnt that any attempt to have managers of the facility find a lasting solution to the challenge has yielded no results although they have attested to the fact that their daily activity has a toll on the health of the residents.

Speaking in an interview, the affected residents led by the Chairman of Madina Community Volunteers, Mr James Adjei noted the bad odour is so pervasive to the extent that the residents who are facing the full brunt of the situation seem to be helpless as they have had to look for extra funds to be visiting the hospital on several occasions.

He asserted that they are on record to have told journalists that urine and other waste surely damage the quality of air and they are victims to that fact.

"As law-abiding citizens, we want to call on authorities to attend to the situation before it gets out of hand.

"We are on record to have a considerably tidy drain in front of the flats but the kind of wastewater from the facility in question leaves a dent.

"We have always tried to keep a dirty environment and the state must help to champion the course for better sanitation," Mr Adjei stressed.

Meanwhile, our checks have also revealed that the matter has been reported to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the health department of the Medina Municipal Assembly but these state authorities had not done anything to solve the problem.
