Cut corruption to curb Ghana crisis - ex-president

In order to combat the current economic crisis, a former president of Ghana has asked the government to restrict the number of political appointments and crack down on corruption.

State institutions, according President John Dramani Mahama, should realign their roles to relieve pressure on the public coffers.

Speaking at a seminar titled "Building the Nation We Want," Mr. Mahama demanded that the government's economic management team be changed and that Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta be fired.

For bad economic management, some MPs had previously called for the finance minister's resignation.

The cedi is the worst-performing currency in the world when compared to the US dollar, and the country's inflation rate has increased to 37.2%.

Mr. Mahama encouraged the government to use the earnings from the nation's oil wealth to protect the general public from fuel price increases.

On Sunday, President Nana Akufo-Addo will address the nation on the rising cost of living.
