Cristiano Ronaldo: Police are investigating a 'outburst' involving a football fan's phone, and the Manchester United star has apologized.

Following Manchester United's 1-0 Premier League defeat against Everton on Saturday, an incident involving a football fan's phone and Cristiano Ronaldo triggered a police inquiry and an apology from the Portuguese international soccer star.

In a video that has gone viral on social media, the 37-year-old Portuguese forward is seen limping off the pitch at Goodison Park before bending down and snatching a phone from the hands of a young supporter.
Merseyside Police announced in a statement that they were in contact with both teams after the match over "claims of an assault."

According to the statement, "while players were leaving the ground at 2.30 pm, it was claimed that a kid was assaulted by one of the away squad as they departed the pitch."
"Investigations are ongoing, and officers are currently working with Everton Football Club to study CCTV material and conduct comprehensive witness interviews in order to determine if an offense has occurred."
A representative for Merseyside Police told CNN on Monday that an update on the event will be released as soon as more information is received.

'It's never easy to cope with emotions in difficult circumstances,
' Ronaldo said in an Instagram message Saturday, apologizing for his "outburst" and promising to take the fan to an Old Trafford match.

United's chances of qualifying for the Champions League next season were further harmed by the setback against a relegation-threatened Everton side, which dropped them to seventh place in the Premier League, six points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

"Dealing with emotions in difficult situations like the one we're in is never simple," Ronaldo added.
"However, we must always be respectful, patient, and set an example for all the young people who love the beautiful game. "I would want to apologize for my outburst and, if possible, ask this supporter to watch a game at Old Trafford as a symbol of fairness and sportsmanship."

Everton's representative informed CNN that the club was seeking to contact the boy's mother in order to invite the two to the club's next home play on April 20, a league encounter against Leicester City.

"To reassure the youngster that occurrences like that are not the norm at football matches," the representative added, "and ideally give him a nice recollection of visits to Goodison Park."
Manchester United refused to comment on the issue, directing CNN to Ronaldo's social media apology.
