The Ashanti Regional Health Director, Dr. Emmanuel Tenkorang has updated Ghanaians on the first COVID-19 case recorded in the Ashanti Region on Monday, March 16, 2020 assuring that patient is on self-isolation and been monitored by medical professionals.

Ghana recorded its sixth COVID-19 incident on Sunday with one occurring in the capital of the Ashanti Region after a 56-year old man who returned form the United Kingdom showed symptoms of the disease and tested positive for coronavirus.

“During the weekend as you might have heard, we have a case in the Ashanti Region and totally we have six cases in Ghana, one from the Ashanti Region,” he updated.

“The case was a fifty six year old man who returned from United Kingdom in the 4th of March and stared showing signs and symptoms on the 10th of March and he was tested on the 12th and we had the results which was positive on coronavirus.

“This is the first case we ve had in the region which add up to the total to make it six,” he briefed the press.

He informed at a press conference organized on Monday by the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate that 30 people who came into contact with the carrier of the virus have been located and been monitored by health professions.

“We have done contract tracing with the case in the Ashanti Region. So far, we ve contacted 30 people who came into close contact with our brother and all of them are been monitored,” he said.

“Our brother is not critically ill for that reason, he is doing self-isolation and we have medical personnel caring for him. We are also caring for the children and the wife. We ve put them under self-isolation to make sure we can identify the condition as possible.

The Regional Health Directorate advised on the need for residents to remain calm given that the Health sector is doing everything possible to contain the virus from spreading.

According to him, it is their responsibility to put measures in place to restrict the increase of COVID-19  through educating inhabitants to follow prompt the safety measures of prevention and the need for the media not to create chaos and panic through thier reportages. He assured that the Directorate will give a regular news update to help decrease the rate of false statements.

“The Ashanti Regional Health Directorate is committed to make sure that we curtail the spread of the Coronavirus and we believe that the media is the key as long as case containment, our preparedness s plan and the other issues that follows are concerned.

“We ve promised to meet you every week to give an update so as to help you support us in our fight against the deadly coronavirus.

“We need to remain very calm. I do not think this call for fear and panic at all. We know that with the risk communication, the preparedness and the information that has been given out, once we adhered to the principles of prevention, nobody would get infected.

Per the president’s directives on late Sunday to regulate COVID 19 by placing a ban on public gathering, Dr. Emmanuel Tenkorang asserted that Nana Addo Dankwa’s conclusion is a step in the right direction, which would help guide and put a stop to further spread.

“We will like to thank the president for this initiative because we know that it’s the key as long as prevention of Coronavirus is concerned and that would control the further spread of the virus,” he revealed.
