Following cases of the coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19) infection in some schools in the country, a group, Concerned Parents for Free SHS Ghana, has called for more proactive measures to help contain its spread.

The group has maintained that although there is no need for parents and the general public to panic over the issue, the government and other relevant concerned bodies in the handling of Covid-19 must be more proactive.

They also called on teachers and other school authorities to continue to enforce the strict adherence to safety protocols by students on campus, stressing ‘’the closure of schools is not the remedy now, instead we need to put in place proactive measures’’.

Ghana has recorded 142 Covid-19 cases in middle and high schools since their reopening last month, Director General of the Ghana Health Service Patrick Kuma-Aboagye said last Tuesday.

A total of 56 cases are confirmed in 23 schools in Greater Accra Region, 82 cases comprising 73 students and nine staff members in Eastern Region, three cases in Upper West Region, and one case in the Western Region, he disclosed at a press conference.

No coronavirus-related death has been recorded yet and all the infected persons have been isolated and are receiving treatment, the director-general added.

Ghana reopened all levels of schools in January after closing them down for nearly 10 months due to the pandemic.
