Somalia football legend Mohamed Farah has lost his life to the novel COVID-19 virus at the age of 59, becoming the first African footballer to die of the pandemic. 

Farah tested positive for the virus a week ago, and he was promptly admitted into the Northwest London Hospital.

It has now been confirmed that he has passed away due to complications arising from the Coronavirus. 

The Somalian legend enjoyed a glittering football career in his country spanning more than 40 years, as he passed away at the Northwest London hospital. His tragic death came just days after it was confirmed that he had the dreaded virus, with the Somalia FA putting up his tribute on their walls.

"Somalia lost football legend Abdulkadir Mohamed Farah to Coronavirus. The legend died at a hospital in London where he was admitted last week," Somalia FA said in a tweet. 

"The SFF sends condolence to his family, relatives and the entire Somali football family," the federation added.

 

 

Born in Beledweyne in Hiiraan province, Farah began his football career while still in school before he turned pro, so he had been playing for Somalia all his life.

Until his death Mohamed was acting advisor to the ministry of youth and sports in Somalia.
