Member of Parliament (MP) for the North Tongu in the Volta region, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has expressed concerns about Ghana’s preparedness to protect its citizens from the novel coronavirus outbreak.

The MP bemoaned that, there are several gaps in Ghana’s preparation as exposed by the World Health Organisation (WHO), putting into dire risk, the safety of the Ghanaian citizen.

Okudzeto Ablakwa mentioned that, there is inadequate financial allocation by the government to manage the outbreak in case of emergency. He also hinted at poor public sensitization on coronavirus, to educate the people on what to do to avoid getting infected or spreading the virus.

“Like many of the constituents we represent, I am deeply worried about policy contradictions, inadequate financial allocation, poor public education, and apparent lack of confidence from the frontline health personnel I have been interacting with about the national commitment to keep us safe” the MP said.

Expressing his concerns via social media, he further questioned the government of Ghana’s unwillingness to take drastic measures to prevent the virus from reaching its territories. He noted that the government’s refusal to impose flight restrictions and evacuate its nationals from affected areas further put Ghana at risk.

“I am also seeking to find out why Government has still  not imposed any flight restrictions from troubled zones particularly when you contrast that with the belligerent refusal to evacuate our own nationals in Wuhan” Ablakwa noted.

Due to the current “precarious situation”, the MP revealed that he has made a formal application to the parliament of Ghana demanding that the authorities responsible for Health, Aviation and Foreign Affairs provide urgent updates to the parliament on the country’s preparedness towards coronavirus.

“I have made an application in parliament today demanding that the Ministers responsible for Health, Aviation and Foreign Affairs be made to provide urgent updates to Parliament on Ghana’s coronavirus (COVID-19) preparedness levels considering the wild global spread to some 55 countries including next door neighbor Nigeria” he asserted.
