Nigeria’s tally of confirmed COVID-19 cases rose to 22, 614 on Thursday as 594 new infections were announced by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

Seven deaths were recorded from the virus, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths from the virus to 549.

The former governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi, was one of the people reported to have died from the virus on Thursday.

The health agency in a tweet Thursday night said the new cases were reported in 22 states.

These are: Lagos, Delta, Ondo, FCT, Edo, Oyo, Kaduna, Enugu, Katsina, Imo, Adamawa, Ogun, Osun, Abia, Rivers, Nasarawa, Bauch, Niger, Kebbi, , Ekiti, Plateau and Taraba.

All the reporting states already had at least a case of the virus.

As of Thursday, 35 states and the FCT have recorded at least a case of the disease. Only one state, Cross River, is yet to report any case of the virus.

In the last one week, states like Oyo, Delta, Ogun have been reporting increasing numbers of infections daily.

Lagos recorded the highest daily figure of the infection on Monday and remains the epicenter for the disease in the country.

Also, Delta reported its highest confirmed cases yet, since the beginning of the outbreak.

Meanwhile, states like Kogi and Jigawa have not reported any new cases in over one week.

The 594 new cases are reported from 22 states- Lagos – 159, Delta – 106, Ondo – 44, FCT – 34, Edo – 34, Oyo – 33, Kaduna – 33, Enugu – 28, Katsina – 25, Imo – 22, Adamawa – 15, Ogun – 12, Osun – 11, Abia – 8, Rivers – 6, Nasarawa – 5, Bauchi – 5, Niger – 5, Kebbi – 4, Ekiti – 3, Plateau – 1 and Taraba – 1.

NCDC said “On June 25, 594 new confirmed cases and 7 deaths were recorded in Nigeria.

"Till date, 22614 cases have been confirmed, 7822 cases have been discharged and 549 deaths have been recorded in 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory."

Since the onset of the outbreak in Nigeria in February, NCDC said 122, 155 samples have so far been tested.

As at the time of reporting, there are 14, 243 active cases of COVID-19 in the country, 7, 822 have recovered and have been discharged.

A breakdown of the 22,614 confirmed cases shows that Lagos State has so far reported 9, 482 cases, followed by FCT – 1,656, Kano – 1,191, Oyo – 1,188, Rivers – 936, Edo – 851, Ogun – 733, Delta – 715, Kaduna – 668, Bauchi – 493, Gombe – 482, Borno – 477, Katsina – 459, Jigawa – 317, Ebonyi – 264, Plateau – 294, Imo – 269, Abia – 288, Ondo – 206, Enugu – 202, Nasarawa – 198, Kwara – 217, Sokoto – 140, Bayelsa – 184, Osun – 84, Zamfara – 76, Kebbi – 71, Anambra – 70, Niger – 84, Adamawa – 73, Yobe – 56, Osun – 67,Akwa Ibom – 83, Benue – 47, Ekiti – 38, Taraba – 19, Taraba – 18, and Kogi – 3

Cases of the virus have continued to increase significantly in Nigeria.

The NCDC said in the absence of a vaccine to prevent the spread of the disease, Nigerians should focus on non-pharmaceutical interventions such as using face masks, physical distancing and frequent hand washing to keep themselves safe from the virus.
