Coronavirus: 'highly contagious' variant discovered in Ghana

Ghana has reported cases of the highly contagious coronavirus variant that emerged in the United Kingdom, officials have said.

This development was confirmed by the President, Nana Akufo-Addo Dankwa during his 22nd COVID-19 update Sunday night

The case was detected at the country’s international airport where passengers arrived back from countries reporting new strain of the COVID-19 virus.

“Recent genomic sequencing undertaken by our scientists have established that some arriving passengers tested positive for new variants of COVID-19”, President Akufo-Addo said.

“Detailed investigations of the cases indicate that apart from arriving passengers at our airport who tested positive, infected persons have recent histories of attending parties, weddings, end of year office programmes, family get-togethers, and funerals”, the President stated.

Ghana’s COVID-19 active cases currently stands at 1,920.
