Conflict boils in the NDC at Amasaman

There is uneasy calm within the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Amasaman Constituency of the Greater Accra Region.

Scores of angry NDC members in the constituency are fuming with anger at their Constituency Chairman, Mr Kofi Winfred Zoryiku, who they accuse of subtle attempts to create disunity in the party.

The agitated NDC members say they have had enough of Chairman Zoryiku’s ploys to destabilise the NDC’s front in the Amasaman constituency.

And what appears to have aggravated matters and infuriated the NDC members in the constituency more is Mr Zoryiku’s latest decision to haul before the Amasaman High Court two of his executives — the Deputy Constituency Secretary, Emmanuel Quarshie and Deputy Organiser, Daniel Aryeetey.

That is not all, also included in the writ is the immediate past NDC Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Emmanuel Nii Okai Laryea.

Chairman Zoryiku is in court because he claims the above three key NDC members have tarnished his image by accusing him of taking bribe from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the 2020 general election.

The NDC constituency members cannot fathom why Chairman Zoryiku brushed aside the party’s disciplinary committee and instead resorted to the court in a matter that could have been resolved at the party level.

And following this development, many of the party delegates are also asking Mr Zoryiku to account for monies that were supposed to be given to them during the NDC presidential primary in 2019 which monies they were only given half GHC10.00 instead of GHC20.00 for each delegate.

Speaking to Soireenews in an interview, the NDC Branch Chairman, Joma, Manhean Electoral Area in the Amasaman Constituency, Mr Williams Afrakoh, popularly known as Lumba, asserted that the action taken by Mr Zoryiku will only pave way for the Amasaman NDC to wash its dirty linen in public.

“By this action, it is obvious Mr Zoryiku is not thinking about the unity of our party in Amasaman but his interest,” he said

However, he warned that the development has the potential of further affecting the electoral fortunes of the NDC in Amasaman in the 2024 poll if allowed to fester.

“There are various channels for an aggrieved party member to go and settle scores. So the question is: why did Mr Zoryiku not use any of these party structures to resolve whatever issues he had with these three important party members in the Amasaman constituency? Lumba quizzed.

Consequently, he called on the leadership of the NDC to - as a matter of urgency - call Mr Zoryiku to order before he creates more divisions in the Amasaman NDC.

“It is about time the national executives of the NDC called Mr Zoryiku to order before things get out of hand,” he cautioned.

According to Lumba, having lost the Amasaman constituency, which is an NDC stronghold to the New Patriotic Party, “this was the time for us to find out what went wrong and prepare adequately ahead of the 2024 election.”

“It is a period where we must all come together to recapture the seat from the NPP and not to see our constituency chair fighting his executives,” he advised.

He indicated that he will not be surprised if NDC members in the Amasaman constituency hit the streets soon to demonstrate against Zoryku’s incorrigible attitude.
